Dr. Silvia Vilches

Dr. Silvia Vilches is a postdoctoral fellow in the department of sociology at Simon Fraser University. She is interested in the connections between university researchers and communities, the ways in which social policy uses community capacity development to achieve aims, and in the intersection between gender, family responsibilities and poverty. These interests originally arose out of advocacy work she did in the 1990s with women and impoverished families, which led her to complete a Master’s degree in policy and practice at the University of Victoria. In her PhD work at UBC in the School of Community and Regional Planning, she worked with a team to study the effects of the 2002 welfare reforms on lone mothers with young children. She has worked with First Nations communities and has a special interest in rural communities. She brings her social policy lens, understanding of rural communities and research with families with young children to the Including All Children Project.

Jinny (Virginia) Hayes

Jinny (Virginia) Hayes, RN, PhD is a Professor Emerita in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. Her research program centres on issues for children with chronic conditions and disabilities and their families, in community and acute care settings, with a particular focus on the family as the unit of analysis. Over 25 years, she has conducted externally reviewed and funded research using quantitative, qualitative, and participatory methods. Several of these were evaluation projects. She currently lives on Gabriola Island, a rural community of 4500.

Helen Brown

Helen Brown, RN, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at UBC. Her research program brings a critical perspective to maternal-infant and women’s health care, practice and policy. Her research activities are joined through a focus on ethics and equity in relation to neonatal and maternity care and community health promotion in rural communities. Helen’s current projects span nursing education, neonatal and pediatric end of life care, trauma and social inequity for vulnerable rural women, Indigenous knowledge and community health action.
